Mixpro DRI vs the conventional locally fabricated homogenizer vessel
Sunscreen quality is decided by three pieces of physics. First, particle size: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide only deliver their UV attenuation when dispersed close to their primary particle size (~60–200 nm); van der Waals forces clump them into micron-scale agglomerates that leave gaps in the UV film — lower measured SPF — while scattering visible light as white cast. Second, shear statistics: SPF tracks the droplet- and particle-size distribution of the whole batch, so any product that escapes the shear zone drags the test result down. Third, heat history: organic filters like avobenzone degrade with every extra minute at temperature and every gram of dissolved oxygen.
The conventional locally fabricated plant — a vessel with a batch homogenizer welded into the base (a bottom entry homogenizer) plus a separate external inline homogenizer on a pumped loop — loses on all three. Here's why a single bottom-mounted homogenizer of a fundamentally different design — the DRI — wins them.
Vessel + bottom batch homogenizer + external inline homogenizer
- Agglomerates survive. ZnO/TiO₂ tipped in from the manhole raft on the surface, wet slowly, and only break down if they happen to drift into the bottom homogenizer. After hours of recirculation, micron-scale clusters remain — white cast on skin, gritty film, SPF below what the filter loading paid for.
- SPF by lottery. The bottom unit shears whatever is near it; the external loop samples the batch at random. Cream near the vessel top can complete the batch without ever seeing a shear zone — so droplet size spreads, and the same recipe tests SPF 50 one batch and SPF 42 the next.
- Long, hot cycles punish avobenzone. Multiple recirculation passes plus friction heat from two rotor-stators keep organic UV filters at elevated temperature for hours — degradation starts before the first jar is filled.
- Oxygen beaten in. The agitator vortex entrains air; dissolved oxygen accelerates UV-filter and antioxidant breakdown, foams the cream, and scatters fill weights.
- TiO₂ hides in the loop. The whitest pigment in the plant sits in external piping and dead legs — cross-contaminating the next product and forcing manual strip-downs.
- Three drives to run. Batch homogenizer, inline homogenizer and transfer pump — bought, powered, sealed and maintained separately.
One bottom-mounted DRI — pump, lump breaker & homogenizer in a single unit
- Dispersed at the instant of wetting. The DRI's self-generated vacuum pulls ZnO/TiO₂ below the liquid surface directly into the rotor-stator gap — each particle meets maximum shear at the moment it first touches liquid, breaking clusters back toward primary particle size. Transparent film, full labelled SPF from every gram of filter.
- SPF by arithmetic. The DRI pumps as it shears: the whole batch is drawn through its three-stage zone in counted vessel turnovers. Particle- and droplet-size distributions stay tight — SPF uniform from the top of the vessel to the bottom, and from batch one to batch three hundred.
- Minutes at temperature, not hours. Up to 80% shorter dispersion cycles and jacket-controlled cooldown mean heat-sensitive filters see a fraction of the thermal load; late actives dose cold through the same induction line.
- Vacuum from start to finish. Emulsification happens air-free — no oxidative attack on filters, a dense bubble-free cream, and accurate fills.
- Nowhere for pigment to hide. No external loop, minimal hold-up, and the homogenizer runs its own CIP without an external pump — validated cleaning between a mineral SPF 50 and a clear gel.
- One drive, one recipe. A single bottom-mounted unit replaces all three machines, and PLC/SCADA replays the identical program every shift.

Nothing is "wrong" — it's simply an architecture with built-in limits: random shear exposure, top powder addition, air entrainment, hold-up in the external loop and operator-dependent pass counts.
