A high shear mixer — also called a rotor-stator mixer, high shear homogenizer, or high shear
reactor — is a precision industrial device that generates intense mechanical forces to blend,
emulsify, disperse, homogenize, and reduce particle sizes in liquids, semi-solids, and
powders.
How the rotor-stator mechanism works:
• A high-speed rotor spins at tip speeds of 3,000–18,000 RPM inside a close-tolerance
stationary stator (gap: 0.1–1 mm).
• This creates powerful suction, drawing liquid and solid ingredients into the mixing
head from below.
• Material is then expelled radially outward through the stator’s precision-machined
slots at extremely high velocity.
• The resulting turbulence, hydraulic shear, and cavitation break down particles —
often to micrometer or nanometer scales — and force immiscible phases to combine
into stable, uniform emulsions or suspensions.
• Variable rotor speeds allow precise control over the shear energy delivered, making
the process fully tunable to your product and viscosity.
Prócer engineers manufacture high shear mixers with tight rotor-stator tolerances and GMPcompliant SS316L wetted parts, ensuring consistent, repeatable results across every batch
size — from 50 ml lab trials to 5,000-litre production runs.

Choosing between batch and inline mixing is one of the most critical decisions in process
design. Here’s how they compare:
Batch High Shear Mixers
• The mixer head is mounted directly into a vessel. The entire batch is processed in
one tank.
• Excellent for thicker, high-viscosity products and formulations requiring flexibility
between batches.
• Suited to multi-product facilities where the same vessel handles different recipes.
• Best for: Multi-product facilities and formulations requiring process flexibility between
batches.
Inline High Shear Mixers
• Integrated directly into a pipeline or recirculation loop. Material flows continuously
through the high-energy rotor-stator zone.
• Every particle passes through the intense shear zone — eliminating ‘dead zones’
found in batch tanks — resulting in superior uniformity.
• Significantly higher energy concentration per unit volume vs. batch mode.
• Shorter processing times, higher throughput, and reduced product-to-product crosscontamination.
• Best for: Continuous production lines, large volumes, powder-into-liquid dispersion,
creams, ointments, peanut butter, high-viscosity emulsions, and processes requiring
a single-pass result.

The rotor-stator head geometry has the single largest impact on mixing outcome. Key
selection parameters include:
• Viscosity & shear sensitivity: High-viscosity products or shear-sensitive biologics
require specific head geometries and controlled tip speeds.
• Target droplet or particle size: Fine emulsions (1–5 µm) require tighter tolerances
and higher RPM than coarse dispersions.
• Stator slot design: Square-hole stators suit general emulsification; fine-slot stators
deliver tighter PSDs; round-hole stators are preferred for fibrous or particulatecontaining products.
• CIP/SIP compatibility: Food, pharma, and cosmetic applications require hygienic
design — smooth bores, no dead legs, and materials that withstand cleaning
chemicals.
• Single-stage vs. multi-stage: Multi-stage rotor-stator assemblies deliver progressively
finer particle reduction in a single pass, reducing recirculation time.
Prócer’s engineers size and specify the rotor-stator assembly based on your detailed
process brief. Share your product datasheet and target specifications to receive a
recommendation.
